Regularizing a vortex sheet near a separation point

چکیده

Current methods for computing vortex sheet separation use a regularization parameter which is discontinuous from the body to the vortex sheet. We propose two methods for reducing the errors associated with the discontinuity and improving convergence with respect to the regularization parameter. The ‘‘velocity smoothing” method is the simpler of the two, and removes the discontinuity in regularization from one of the two equations where it occurs. The ‘‘tapered smoothing” method removes the discontinuity from both equations. In a model problem, both methods are found to converge much more rapidly (with exponents 3/2 and 2 versus 1/2 for the standard method) as the regularization parameter tends to zero. Unsteady algorithms are proposed for evolving the free sheet using the two methods, and are tested in a benchmark problem. Accuracy is significantly improved for similar computational expense. 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Management of Vortices Trailing Flapped Wings via Separation Control

A pilot study was conducted on a flapped semi-span model to investigate the concept and viability of near-wake vortex management via separation control. Passive control was achieved by means of a simple fairing and active control was achieved via zero mass-flux blowing slots. Vortex sheet strength, estimated by integrating surface pressure ports, was used to predict vortex characteristics by me...

Vortex Sheet Roll-up Due to the Motion of a Flat Plate

The vortex-blob method is extended to compute vortex sheet separation at a sharp edge. A smoothing parameter con trols the amount of detail occuring in the rolled-up spiral. Cal culations are presented for the case of vortex sheet roll-up due to an impulsively started flat plate.

The attraction between a flexible filament and a point vortex

We determine the inviscid dynamics of a point vortex in the vicinity of a flexible filament. For a wide range of filament bending rigidities, the filament is attracted to the point vortex, which generally moves tangentially to it. We find evidence that the point vortex collides with the filament at a critical time, with the separation distance tending to zero like a square root of temporal dist...

Effects of heat generation and thermal radiation on steady MHD flow near a stagnation point on a linear stretching sheet in porous medium and presence of variable thermal conductivity and mass transfer

The present paper was aimed to study the effects of variable thermal conductivity and heat generation on the flow of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field, thermal radiation, porous medium, mass transfer, and variable free stream near a stagnation point on a non-conducting stretching sheet. Equations of continuity, momentum...

Calculations of the Flow over Thick, Conical, Slender Wings with Leading-Edge Separation

The vortex-sheet model of leading-edge separation previously applied to flat-plate delta wings has been applied to thick delta wings in the form of rhombic cones. The simplifications introduced by the use of slender-body theory and an asymptotic treatment for the core of the vortex have been retained. The results show that the vortex sheet leaves the wing tangentially to the lower surface. The ...
